media This program was presented on television channel SBS at 7.30pm Tuesday 23 February 2010 with guest speaker  Professor Patrick McGorry (Australian of the Year).  Professor McGorry stated that '75% of the disorders of adult life, mental health and related disorders appear before the age of 25.  But if we look around Australia, there are 750,000 young Australians who currently do not have access to care, yet they have a mental health problem.'...

Bonus Payments for Carers and Pensioners
media The Federal Government recently announced that it will 'deliver bonus payments across all pension types, including the Carer Payment, Disability Support Pension, and Carer Allowance.... The following lump sum payments will be paid in the fortnight beginning 8 December 2008:
- $1 400 to singles and $2 000 to couples receiving the Carer Payment
- $1 000 (for each eligible person being cared for) to Carer Allowance recipients
Caring families may also benefit from lump sum payments to other Pension and Payments types..."

The Other Film Festival
media New cinema by, with and about people with a disability.  Australia's only disability film festival encourages excellence in filmmaking, accessible cinema and exchange of ideas.  The 2008  festival will be held at Melbourne Museum in September.  Selected films will be in competition for the Best Film prize of $5000 AUD.  Other prizes are to be announced.

All entries are through Withoutabox online entry form at www.withoutabox.com/login/5000 by closing date of 3 March 2008.  Entry fee is $30, or student $25 by credit card payment only through the online system.

Disabled 'need help to keep jobs'
media "The Federal Government's welfare-to-work reforms could add to the misery of people on disability benefits unless there is targeted support for them a new report has found.  The Productivity Commission research report into non full-time work arrangements said even once a person on disability benefits got a job they might need continuing government support to keep it. 

The report found that in most cases, a person taking on casual employment had a much better chance of either going on to full-time work or at least finding other casual work.

However, in three groups, it found getting casual work was no guarantee of certainty...

Sane StigmaWatch
media "During 2008-2009, StigmaWatch received 326 reports of stigma.  The majority of inappropriate coverage was associated with the reporting of suicide, particularly the description of methods in news stories and features.  The most extreme stigmatising media coverage, however, was sensationalised news reporting, often concerning violence or the inaccurate, misleading and hurtful use of terms such as 'schizophrenic'...

Carers Victoria Media Release 14 May 2008 'Carers Victoria CEO, Maria Bohan says that the Federal Budget will make very little difference to the lives of carers and their families.

"Kevin Rudd promised that carers would not be $1 dollar worse off after the budget" Ms Bohan said.  "We now understand that carers are unlikely to be $1 better off."

"We are pleased that more families will now be eligible for the Carer Payment (child), but if we learned anything from the media frenzy surrounding the Carer Bonus, it was that carers are among the most disadvantaged in our community and current payments are grossly inadequate."...

Family Carers Pay High Price
media "One in seven Australians - or about 2.6 million people - are caring for their elderly parents or disabled children and are about $5600 worse off each year than someone with similar responsibilities.

And for almost 40 per cent of carers, the main source of income is a government pension.

Mental Crisis to Receive $1.5 billion
media 'Medicare will be dramatically expanded to allow more mentally ill people to see psychologists on referral from the family doctor as part of a $1.5 billion plan to tackle the nation's mental health crisis.  In a concerted effort to address the disorders that touch as many as one in five Australians a year, "safe houses" for mental patients could also be established to provide short-term accommodation for those left destitute...

Crisis Support Services - Suicide Helpline
media Due to funding cuts of $200,000 this financial year Suicide Helpline is reduced from two professional counsellors available 24 hours a day to take calls, to eight hours a day. One counsellor is available the rest of time. 'Chief executive Wendy Sturgess yesterday said people were now finding it difficult to access counselling. "I've had a number of people complain thay they were trying to get help but they couldn't." she said...
