'Globalization: Culture and Society in the

Space economy of Late Capitalism'

Robert Hassan, Ph.D. student, Politics, School of Social & Behavioural Sciences (E-Mail)

This piece extrapolates from the work of Marx and David Harvey to construct a theory of the action of capital in space - which Hassan argues is the essence of globalization. The finite nature of space and the adaptive nature of accumulation gives the expansionary processes of capitalism is differing surface appearances, and so has mutated, historically through phases of imperialism, autarky, 'golden age' boom, Fordism and post-Fordism. All these phases have distinct consequences for culture, politics and society, and Hassan's research has analysed these in the context of the basic theory.
